Field trip?

Work in progress as a group - next week 5/1!  Have your edit down to 40 faves and then anything else you want to look at with the group.  Also have some questions in mind to ask the group.  The questions should help the class give you feedback about the progress of your project. Final critiques are Friday 5/22 9:30a-3:20p.

Also, please comment on this posting by telling me where you would like to go for our next field trip.  I was thinking it would be 5/8.  Some suggestions so far are the Legion of Honor (to shoot), 49 Geary Galleries (to look at artwork), Lake Merrit in Oakland (to shoot), or some place else?

great presentations!

Thanks to everyone who was in class, on time, and ready to present. Your presentations will count toward your final project grade. I will give you each an evaluation for those in the next class.
This week you should be well into production (ie: shooting) so when you get to class next week we will be editing together one on one to prepare for the work in progress crit in a few weeks. YOU MUST HAVE WORK TO SHOW ME FRIDAY 4/3.

Your proposals

Where are your proposals, peeps? You need to get those to me by email ASAP and then be ready to present your project to the class (showing examples of other work in similar vein) this Friday.

Schedule

Today seemed productive. Several of you are up to speed at this point ready to turn in Day in the Life and many of you still have to shoot so get to it! I look forward to seeing everyone's posts. We will have crit on Friday 3/12 and the intro to the final project (yes, already!).
Friday 3/20 I will be at a meeting on campus most of the day and am lining up an awesome sub for you who will speak about their work and then I will try and make it in for meetings during open lab time at the end. If I get caught in the meeting then I will expect you to post to the blog your project ideas and I will comment. A draft of your final project proposal should be emailed to me by that date as well.
Friday 3/27 You will present your final project proposal to the class in the form of a verbal and written description and a mini-slide show that will feature examples of similar work. We will get more into that when I assign the final. We should have time in the afternoon for open lab.
If anyone has suggestions on field trips they ar einterested in taking please send an email my way or comment to this post. Also, don't forget Valerie is coordinating a visit to the SFMOMA Monday 4/9. Check out her blog for more details.

Change in Schedule & Project Due Date

Ok, peeps - I hope you enjoyed class last week! It sounds like many of you need an extra week for the Day in the Life project, so consider this a gift - you get one more week to catch up on everything. A Day in the Life and any past due projects are now due on Friday 3/13. We will critique Day in the Life at the start of class that day (Friday the 13th!). We will also have potluck so bring something delicious to eat to share at the break with class! We will then look at slides and go over the final project. Your final project proposal will be due the following week on Friday, 3/20. I will need to attend a department meeting all day that day so there will be a sub and you will have that day as an open lab/shooting day. I will be available for individual meetings any time during my office hours or by appointment. I will drop a schedule for the remainder of the semester in the Materials drive this Friday. We are already mid semester!

Everyone should be in class this Friday so we can check in on your progress. Maybe we will look at a movie or I might present more slides. I want you to mostly have some time to work so bring stuff to show me and work on.

Please do not forget to submit an image to the PDN Photo A Day site listed on a previous blog post!

Field trip & blog to follow

The field trip was pretty chaotic but fun! We went to the Photo Epicenter, SF Camerawork gallery, Jack Hanley Gallery, Rayko Photo Center, and the finale was the top of the Marriot downtown SF where we saw gorgeous views of the city. Yelena, Valerie, Sam, and Millie we missed you! I posted some of the shots I took on my flickr account if you want to check them out.

Also, Jessica sent this link my way to share with you. It's a great blog about photojournalism and getting your start as a professional photographer. Be sure to check it out!

Mayumi Hamanaka will sub class this Friday so please be in the lab at 9:30a ready to view her work. She will show her work so please research her artwork and be prepared to ask her questions. You will have open lab time to work on your Day in the Life assignment. You may shoot but it would be a better use of the lab time to have shot some already to show Mayumi and get feedback before going out to shoot again.

PDN Photo of the Day

I want everyone in the class to submit one photograph to this site:

http://www.pdnphotooftheday.com/

It will make you famous. I promise.*

*Ok, it might not make you famous but it will get one of your photographs looked at by a professional photo editor. That's worth something, right?

A Day in the Life

Make a series of 4-8 images that explore "one day" in the life of a subject that interests you. This can be one person or a certain group of people but you must photograph a wide variety of activities that take place regularly in this person/group's life. You may photograph over any length of time and edit to create a diverse representation of this "day in the life." You may choose to include captions or not. Shoot at least 250 images and after careful editing, post all final images to your blog by Friday, 3/6. Turn in all contacts (flattened jpgs) to the instructor's drop box in a folder labeled: LastName_Assign3.

Event assignment - DUE 2/13

Your next assignment is to research and shoot at least 100 images of an event either on campus or in your community (keep it very local). Be sure to take careful notes so you can include captions with your five final images posted to your blog. This assignment is due 2/13.

In addition to the slide show in class here are some links of some photo essays documenting the Obama Inauguration. Please feel free to post additional links (inaugural or other events/news photos) in the comments to this blog.

Decisive Moment

Welcome to my Digital Documentary blog. Look here in the future for info on assignments, links, resources, and images to inspire. I might also post some images I take along the way. We'll see...

So your first assignment is to photograph the "Decisive Moment" a phrase coined by Henri Cartier-Bresson. As he said in the movie The Impassioned Eye, "Yes, no, yes, no, no, yes." You must shoot at least 250 images RAW and pick one that captures that exact moment where everything is perfectly in sync. Turn in digital contacts of all images shot along with one image as a tiff file. This assignment is due 1/30 at the start of class.

Please bring in a small portfolio of your images to share in the next class. I will also assign the next assignment "Campus Event" and have some open lab time to go over your images for Decisive Moment and research an even to photograph on campus. The image I am posting is the one I was telling you about taken with an iphone. Look, ma! No shutter!

Please do not forget to start your blog or if you already have one then just start posting to it for this class. Be sure to set up your account to notify me when you post (I can help with this if you need it).
